September 20, 2005 - Two days after hurricane Katrina rolled across the central
Gulf Coast, FEMA requested assistance from many of their 28 search and rescue
teams from across the nation. One of these, Nevada Task Force1 (NV TF1), was
deployed to New Orleans on August 31st. The team included 4 structural engineers,
including Phil DeLaMare, PE, SE, a principal in our Las
Vegas office. The team
spent two weeks involved in house to house search and rescue in Northeast New
Orleans. Structural wind damage proved extensive to wood, masonry and steel
structures. The mission utilized boat, helicopter and foot searches in order
to locate survivors. NV TF1 was instrumental in making 5 live rescues and 35
evacuations. They returned to Las Vegas on September 16th. We invite you to
see photographs of this rescue effort below.
In the wake of recent disasters in the Gulf Coast region, Mendenhall
Smith Structural Engineers offers our hope for a safe and quick return
for all displaced families to their homes. At the same time, we recognize
that many structural engineers and designers have been temporarily relocated
as a result of these events and wish to invite interested and qualified
individuals and their families to relocate. Please contact us at this
link if you are interested in learning more about available positions.
